THE ORCA PUP
The ORCA Pup is a super small super easy to build and super fun canoe. She is extremely light weighing around 10kg! She can be built in 2 days, and taken away on the second once the resin has set. She has a flat bottom and a slight rocker but is wide enough to feel stable in the water, perfect to easily transport and take on day trips to the local river side pub. She is perfect for a kid under supervision to build, and would make a great canoe for messing around in.
CAN I BULD IT
This is our simplest canoe to build. The stages of construction are very straightforward and progressive, and as you build your canoe, you will be surprised at how quickly it comes together. You will be working on your own canoe. If you have never done any wood work, bringing friends and family to help, makes the job much easier and fun! Don’t forget... we've had years of practise eradicating those time consuming errors and we are always on hand to help if you need, but remember this is your canoe to build….
NOTE: no extra cost to bring helpers along,,the more the merrier.
This is a self-catering course, so bring some daytime fodder. We normally have a 1 hour lunch break so plenty of time to nip off to the local for food if you need as well. We have tea and coffee a plenty, so no need to bring flasks etc.
WHO WE ARE
The workshops are run by Steve and Dan. Two self proclaimed canoe nuts, who have been building canoes since 1997!
There is plenty of time to paint your canoe, we have a selection of colours but feel free to bring your own.
And yes you can paddle your canoe once the paint is dry right out of our workshop on Ullswater!!
Don't forget your roof bars, and some decent cam buckle straps.. we have purpose made canoe straps for sale £10 a pair if you need some.
NOTE: We don't recommend ratchet straps.
PUP OPTIONAL EXTRAS
All extras can be now be purchased when you book a build, or you can wait till you are at the workshop.
The Pup comes with one standard seat made up of an oak spar and ply as a seat bace that you will need to make up. If you would like we have hand made web seats starting from £30, along with carry yokes. We also can make up sailing rigs and foldaway cabins, all can be purchased at the workshop.
NOTE: We only recommend that the PUP takes only one person, if you want to carry more have a look at the Lakelander or Prospector might be the ticket!
All our workshops will be run from the shores of Ullswater at Pooley Bridge. There are plenty of campsites and accommodation in this area or you can still stay at our campsite in Greatstickland about 20min drive.
We can offer camping at Great Strickland (20 minutes away by car), but space is limited, so please text message Tom on 07774239699 to check availability.. It is a no frills kind of affair in a field.. there is a basic hot shower and flushing toilet. Dogs are allowed. This is all arranged with the farm owners and can be paid in cash to them.
If you want something closer to the workshop, the Pooley Bridge and Penrith area has plenty of other options from luxury glampsites to B&Bs and hotels. Have a look at our accommodation page for some options.
