Frequently Asked Questions banner

1. What kind of people attend these courses? Our clients vary widely in both backgrounds and lifestyles. All have one thing in common – a desire to spend some time away from their ‘normal’ day to day routines to learn an exciting new skill in stunning landscapes with like minded people.

2. Do I need any previous experience? Save for our Voyageur and Advanced River Runner courses – None – most of our new clients are beginners.

3. Do I need any specialist equipment / clothing? NO! Please do not rush out and buy the most expensive kit you can find. The adverts tell you that will die without it, you won’t. Just ensure that your paddling clothes are wool or polyester and your waterproofs are waterproof!. Leave your cotton clothing for the pub. See kit list

3a What kit do you provide? We provide canoes, paddles, buoyancy aids, safety kit, group1st Aid kit, main group shelter, poles and sails. Clients are advised to supply all personal clothing and camping kit – see kit list.

4. Are the courses physically demanding? Of course, we shall be paddling. You will discover however, that the 5 day courses are the ‘tougher’ ones – day 3 is when you feel decidedly ‘warmed up’. We also do not expect super-human feats of endurance.

4a I have bad knees, do I have to kneel? Our boats are big enough to sit, lie, kneel and headstand, so you choose a position that is most comfortable for you.

5. Is there a minimum age? Yes. 18 However, if you have a younger son or daughter that you would like to attend, just drop us a line.

6. Can I keep my stuff dry? No problem. We carry dry bags for stuff like cameras, phones, teddy bears etc.. You will need to bring your own dry bag for the 5 day trips. We recommend the Gull 100litre dry bag (black) - £30 pounds from e-bay!

7. Are the canoes stable? Yes, very. To fall out accidentally is very rare.

8. Do you cater for specific dietary needs? Often we have special requests – just ensure to write it down on your medical forms.

9. Are pets allowed? Unfortunately not.

10. Will my car be safe? We have never had a problem of any kind regarding the safety of vehicles.

11. Can I bring my own canoe / paddle? It is rare that clients own canoes or paddles, but if you do and would like to bring them along, just let us know beforehand.

12 . Is there anything you advise NOT to bring . Yes. You will not need the following.. Stoves and fuel, walking boots, axes, cooking pots.
